Garages are easy to underestimate

Garage, basement, shed, and storage closet items often get ignored until late because they are not part of daily life. Then moving week arrives and the household still has tools, hardware, outdoor gear, sports equipment, paint supplies, seasonal decor, bins, and half-empty shelves. These areas can add 10 to 30 boxes depending on the home.

The problem is not only quantity. Storage zones include heavy, sharp, dirty, awkward, and restricted items. They need sorting before packing, and some items may not be allowed on a moving truck.

Sort before you pack

Storage areas collect duplicates and expired supplies. Before boxing, create groups for keep, donate, recycle, dispose, and cannot move. This matters because the fastest way to reduce a high estimate is to remove items from storage zones. Do not buy boxes for things you already know you will not use in the new home.

Check local disposal rules for paint, chemicals, fuel, batteries, and similar materials. These should not be thrown randomly into moving boxes.

Pack heavy items safely

  • Use small boxes for tools, hardware, and dense supplies.
  • Tape the bottom of any box carrying heavy garage items.
  • Protect sharp edges before they touch cardboard.
  • Keep liquids upright and separate from paper goods.
  • Label storage boxes by category, not just garage.

When to adjust the calculator

Add garage or basement in the calculator if these areas are more than a few shelves. Add books or heavy storage if the zone includes files, tools, hardware, or bins of dense items. Add maximal stuff level only when the whole household is full, not just one storage shelf.
